Different Types of Eye Diseases
Early recognition and diagnosis are essential when it comes to eye disease. Learning about the different types of eye disease can help keep our patients informed on some of the early signs of developing eye disease.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve plays an essential role as it carries the information your retina receives to your brain, providing you with vision.
Glaucoma can occur at any age but is more common in older adults and is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60.
For more information, visit our treatment page on glaucoma.
Cataracts
Cataracts develop when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes clouded. Cataracts begin forming when proteins in the eye form clumps that can prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina. Cataracts can make daily activities such as reading or driving a car more difficult.
Some common signs and symptoms of cataracts can include:
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Clouded, blurred, or dim vision
- Fading or yellowing of colors
- Double vision in the affected eye
- Increasing difficulty with driving at night
When cataracts begin to affect your daily life and prevent you from going about your daily activities—surgery is the only option to remove them.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
AMD is a progressive age-related condition that affects your central vision and damages your macula. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults.
There are 2 main types of AMD to monitor:
- Dry AMD is the more common form of the disease and happens in early, intermediate, and late stages. It usually progresses over several years. While there is no cure, prevention methods like giving up smoking and switching to a healthier diet can help slow the disease.
- Wet AMD is the less common form of the disease and usually results in faster vision loss. Wet AMD is always late-stage and happens when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of your eye and damage the macula.
Managing AMD depends on what stage the disease has progressed to. A comprehensive eye exam can help our team monitor your AMD development and prepare a personalized treatment plan.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, occurs when there is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white of the eyes.
Conjunctivitis can be a result of a bacterial or viral infection as well as allergic reactions. In some cases, conjunctivitis can be contagious and cause eye pain and severe redness.
Some common signs and symptoms of pink eye can include:
- Eye redness
- Itchy eyes
- A gritty feeling in your eyes
- Tearing in the affected eye
- A pus-like discharge
Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to help ease the discomfort that can accompany conjunctivitis and limit the spread.
If you experience severe eye pain, blurred vision, or light sensitivity, contact us at Solano EyeCare for emergency eye care.
